Abstract

Euphemisms, ubiquitous in human communication, serve as vital tools shaping interactions in daily life. While there exists a considerable body of research exploring euphemism development, it both yields substantial insights and reveals gaps warranting further investigation. This paper endeavors to delve into the pragmatic functions of English euphemisms through the lens of pragmatic principles. Through a comprehensive examination of real-life instances where euphemisms are employed, coupled with a thorough analysis guided by pragmatic principles, this study aims to elucidate the varied functions of euphemisms in human interactions. By navigating the intricacies of pragmatic principles alongside empirical observations, this paper asserts that euphemisms fulfill diverse roles in facilitating successful communication between interlocutors. Ultimately, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of the nuanced dynamics at play in the pragmatic use of euphemisms in everyday discourse.
